Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The atmosphere is pretty quirky. Our table ordered the specials they were running for the day-chicken enchiladas with rice and beans & tacos (gyro, shrimp with pineapple salsa, and chicken bacon ranch). The actual chicken enchiladas were delicious. The meat was seasoned and cooked quite yummy! The rice was just okay and the black beans were just straight out of a can awful! The tacos were pretty large and yummy!

I've come here a few times and it's not bad. It's decent "tex mex" food and beer selection. It's nothing fancy but they have great service and it's pretty quick. The only thing I don't care for is the cheese dip. It's a little too liquidy and essentially just falls off the chip. Food isn't pricey which is usually the main reason I end up here. They have nachos which are a huge portion and you can add your choices of meat. Tacos, burritos and the standard tex mex food are all on the menu.

Juanita Greenberg's is like the Charleston version of Chuy's (the chain Tex-Mex place). It's Tex-Mex food with quirky/fun/tacky decor and frozen margaritas. I was desperately craving Mexican (translation: hungover) and wound up at Juanita Greenberg's after LaHa Mount P was closed. LaHa it is not. Juanita Greenberg's is vibrant, clean, and Tex-Mex rather than Americanized Mexican. The frozen margarita wasn't the best I've had, but considering the fact I hadn't had a margarita in a month I'll take what I can get. I ordered the Nachos Royale with chicken and the server warned me it was large. I said that was fine because I figured I could swing the $10 nachos even if I didn't eat them all. Holy plate of nachos Batman! It's seriously like a 12" pizza tray with 6" high of nachos piled on it. They were very good and probably enough to feed a Super Bowl party. My gentleman caller had the chicken quesadilla and described it as "meh." There were a lot of families when we were there mid-afternoon on a Sunday. I can kind of see how it lends itself to that in between cheap food and the ability to accommodate large parties. I would go back to Juanita Goldberg's, but I would more likely get the Nachos Royale to go for my next football party.

Cool and interesting space. I came here late night. Even though it was almost 1am, the bartender was friendly and attentive. I like how they have a bar that connects the outside sitting area. So if you're sitting inside and have a friend smoking outside, you can basically speak to each other across the bar. There is a small upstairs with a pool table. Also pretty cool because you can look down into the bar area and watch the drunk people acting a fool. They also have live music here but I missed out on that. I'll come back for sure and try the food as I've been reading that it's quite the bang for your buck.

The food is awesome for Tex mex. The interior is fun for all ages. What I love about juanitas is the game room upstairs. It separates you from the bar crowd. The inside is funkadelic and fun. My favorite thing to order is the quesadilla and queso! I honestly say they have the best queso in town. Extra thick with a kick to it. Atmosphere is super fun! Overall I say this place is off the cheezy! (Off the chain)

Updating my review. I just can't go more than 3 stars here. The food is phenomenal, but the service just seems... Off. This visit started with a nonexistent greater, so we took a table near the bar and were promptly ignored until we flagged down the greeter who finally decided to return from the back. A conversation about how the basic waiter/patron relationship worked ensued that resembled a scene from the Dazed and Confused. Finally straight, a waitress was finally involved and the meal went on as normal. The live music was great and the resident "guy who is stuck in the 80s" provided humor for us throughout as he managed to work not only the soundboard but the entire room with his Kramer hair and signature flaming bowling shirt.

Great for a quick an easy bite. Fast service and great food! Nothing fancy but the perfect casual place to pop in after a day at the beach. You can come from work or in your sandy flip flops and always get a drink and a good meal. Outside tables are great and you can bring the pups, too! Inside and outdoor bar seats are always nice for happy hour and they serve food late which is always good to know!

I have to say I have been putting off coming to this location Juanita's since moving to Mt. Pleasant after having just OK experiences at the one downtown. Unlike the downtown location this one felt a lot friendlier, cleaner, didn't smell like beer & puke, and had a very comfortable vibe to it. I'm really glad I gave it a shot last night. We really enjoyed the live music, comfortable inside/outside patio, cheap food, and good selection of beers on the menu. Service was also an A+ here last night; both of the bartenders were eager to help us out and keep our drinks full while we enjoyed the band playing. For those looking for a deal they have a great happy hour with special on margarita's and food; not to mention the 2 tacos & a PBR deal for $6 all day everyday.

I was a little disappointed... I read and heard lots of good things about this place so I guess my expectations were high. I had a burrito with black beans and tofu, and my friend had a chicken and brown rice bowl. The food was okay, it was almost like a sit-down Moe's but pricier. We also had a coupon for free chips and salsa (it's regularly $4ish). It seems like they have good happy hour specials. The service was good and the atmosphere was pretty nice, very beachy and you can sit outdoors on a nice day. It's not a bad place to go but I probably wouldn't make an effort to get back there. One plus... plenty of parking! They share a lot with Andolini's next door.
(2)Nat C.
It's after happy hour and all you had were a split order of $30 fried green tomatoes and seven hifalutin cocktails. Now you're starved, broke, and just want a beer. This is when you go Juanita Greenbergs. The drinks and food are ridiculously cheap and delicious. There are too many specials to name so go and try them all. Meet other YPs who like music, food, drinking, and meeting new people. It's a great stop whenever I'm in MP.
(4)Dori S.
Great Tex-Mex Great variety of food Very good value Will definitely return on our next visit to Mt Pleasant
(5)Rich G.
This place is f ing terrible. The kids meals are a joke. The quality of the food and service is terrible. I could make a better meal at home and be pleased with the results. This place needs a complete overhaul of its menu and quality of recipes. No wonder why other Juanitas and andolinis have closed. It's a disappointment to go out to dinner and feel like you have been screwed when you get the bill. There are other better places in town. I'll stick to Zia in my neighborhood. Good riddance.
(1)Katie B.
I went here last weekend. My dad was in town and we were looking for a cheaper Mexican place in the Mt pleasant area, so we stopped here hoping for that. We ordered the chip trio with the guacamole, salsa and queso. All of the dips were just okay. Nothing great. My dad ordered a margarita and it came in a tiny glass. He said it was not the best margarita he has ever had. We both ordered fish tacos. I ordered mine on corn tortillas and my dad ordered flour tortillas, but when they arrived it looked as though our tacos had the same type of tortillas. I'm sure not, but I think both of our tacos came out with flour tortillas. The fish had a good taste, but they were quite small. My dad was surprised that they charged for chips and salsa, but I explained that most places in the area don't give free chips and salsa, but when we got the bill it ended up being close for 40 dollars for just our tacos and the chips. It was pretty disappointing and I am sure I will not be going back.
(2)Alex M.
People in Charleston seem to love Juanita Greenberg's. That goes a long way towards reinforcing my belief that people in Charleston have no idea what quality food is. For a supposed "foodie" town, there sure are a lot of these absolutely abysmal local places that natives go on and on about. There's not much to say, so I'll keep it brief: the meat was poorly seasoned, everything tasted like it had been thawed and microwaved, the food clearly comes in plastic baggies from ConAgra, the vibe was low-end sports bar, the drink menu was terrible, and the salsa tasted like ketchup with chili powder mixed in. It's Mexican food for people who think that Applebees is the height of fine dining, which really says it all.
(2)Meghan C.
This place freaking WORKS! Fast, attentive service. Hardcore $3 house margs during happy hour. Big quesadillas. Great prices. Awesome guac and salsa (I don't dig salsa). NFL package. $3 shots. Great tunes! Walked into the Beastie Boys! Kitchen was playing equally good, albeit different music. We were with the little guy so they sat us waaaay in the back but didn't forget us! :::Arnold Voice::: DO IT. DO IT NOW.
(5)Tom P.
Went back, it was great, had some killer margaritas and the bartender was very prompt and funny (and cute!!!) I had a Brown Rice Bowl, it hit the spot. My friend did 2 tacos and a PBR for $5 and was full, really good 2 man band playing too. I don't go to Mt. Pleasant much but this is my new spot over there.
(5)Steve S.
Nice place with pretty decent food. It's nothing close to authentic mexican food, tex-mex at best. However my tacos were good, and I like that they have options for corn instead of only flour tacos and chips. Where else can you get 2 tacos and a beer for $5? I'd say the food was a solid 3.5 stars but I moved them up to 4 because they have a nice patio and I love to eat outside and enjoy the day.

Some of my clients were having a mandatory wedding at Patriot's Point, isn't that the wedding Mecca? I had an hour, so you know I was heading to the closest bar. Juanita Greenberg, I love you girl. Walked in, middle of the day, beginning of happy hour! Yay!! Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end. Four dolla can make you hollar at Juanita's happy hour.. I ordered nachos and it was like pizza, soft tortillas not crispy, loaded with beans, tomatoes & cheese, extra jalapenos! (I'm sitting in a coffee shop, someone said, no whip cream, I just typed extra whip instead of jalapenos!) Glad I caught that! Super nice bartender. Not hey, how ya doin, wink, wink, pointing his fingers, he was more like low key, sincere and friendly. Hola chica guapa, see you next visit.

Yuck Yuck Yuck.... that's all that needs to be said! GROSS!
(1)Matthew K.
This place is great. Food is not the healthiest but it has always been consistently good. Happy hour is usually packed with people sitting outside and inside.
(4)Andrew W.
If you are ever in the Shem Creek area and want a place with a smaller crowd, decent mexican food, and a nice atmosphere, Juanita's is your spot. I've never been wowed by their food but I have had plenty of good meals there...including just recently the blackened shrimp taco with a mango and cilantro sauce. The bartenders and wait staff are fun people and attentive. They have recently revamped the upstairs to be a game room complete with pool table, a handful of arcade games and tvs which was a nice touch. Their are three separate outside areas, one connected and covered, one on the side open, and one in the front along side Coleman Blvd.
(4)Janice N.
Skip this place possibly worst service ever and the food was meh! Waitress couldn't be bothered with us as we were not drinking shots and it was 5pm skip skip skip
(1)Mark L.
It was my first time at the new Juanita that opened on Coleman Blvd. It was just after opening on Saturday morning and I loved the layout and the staff. Mind you, it was quiet but a few families joined in later on. We had a couple of drinks and some chips and salsa and overall had a good feel. With indoor and outdoor seating as well as corn hole in the front, this is a great spot and very relaxing to watch some games or have a few drinks with friends.
(4)William H.
I have to say that I never went to the location downtown, but when it opened here I went, and I really like it. It's fast, fun venue, great service, and most of all the food is always hot and good. They have great specials, and live music as well. This is a great time, and a great location.
(4)B D.
Very mediocre food. Everything was quite bland. The salt missing from the food was found in the margarita which tasted like the ocean. Service could have been a bit more attentive.

Juanita Greenbergs is located right in front of Andolinis in fact they share the same parking lot. There's a decent amount of seating inside and out. It seemed like a lot more out than in. However, there's an upstairs that I didn't get a chance to check it out. I sat at the bar and it wasn't super busy but the bartender was noticeably absent often. While sitting at the bar, I ordered Chips and Salsa while waiting for a friend to arrive. The salsa was pretty much like spaghetti sauce with a kick. The nacho chips were smaller and thicker. Not the thin and warm restaurant style they were more like supermarket brand. I had the Chicken Burrito and it was decent but not great. I might suggest paying the extra $.50 for rice next time. My friend ordered the shrimp quesadilla and said it wasn't bad. The guy beside me ordered the giant nacho pizza and said he thought it was pretty good. They have really nice TVs in there although you might crick your neck after watching for a while but I imagine it's probably pretty good place to watch a sports game. They did have live music but it ended about 930-ish and I got there late the music was a guy on a guitar you was pretty good actually but it was very very loud.

Fun place for some decent Mexican food - which around here is hard to find. Liked the food, the margaritas this place. Would go back
(4)John D.
For some fresh Mexican food, Juanita's is your place. Great atmosphere and service make this our new favorite Mexican restaurant when visiting MTP. I had the chicken quesadilla. I couldn't finish it all there was so much food. The quesadilla was about 0.75 inches thick and loaded with chicken. My wife had the nachos royale and thought it was great. We watched as they made our food because of the glass window into the kitchen. The nachos were actually a tortilla shell which was baked first. Then all the toppings were added and placed back in the oven. So, the tortilla was crunchy along with all the toppings. We saw a new way to make nachos at home. The only minor issue was the chips for the chips and salsa were out of a bag. You could tell as all the other food selections were fresh. The chips were out of place so to speak. That won't stop us from going back.

I Love Juanita's in Mt. Pleasant. I always loved going downtown but this location is so easy to get to with plenty of parking! Low budget, now problem. Share the huge nachos!! Delicious!
(4)Colleen J.
Lot's of space. Great happy hour deals on pitcher margaritas and foods. Black bean and tofu options for most plates instead of the standard -if you don't want chicken/pork/beef you just get re-fried beans in place. The downtown location is more of a bar and I'm not really a fan, this location is more of a restaurant and a lot better in my opinion. Thumbs up from moi.

Nachos come in three styles: 1. Ballpark nachos: stale chips with yellow "cheeze product". These taste good only in ballparks, and only if you ask for triple jalapenos. 2. Fancy nachos: Six to twelve large chips individually loaded with melted real cheese, sliced meat quality pico de gallo, and usually a sauce or two drizzled over the top. My favorite type of these was served at Cantina Laredo, of which there are several throughout Texas. 3. 'Pile' nachos: Usually served in Tex-mex restaurants with brightly colored, lovably tacky interiors. They consist of a pile of chips and innumerable toppings which usually require a fork because of chip-wilt. They are third in line of perfect hangover Mexican food after greasy breakfast burritos and chimichangas. Juanits Greenberg's serves some of the best 'pile' nachos I've had. They serve theirs with a cheese sauce, but not one of those nasty canned sauces (like my beloved ballpark nacho). It's a white sauce that actually tastes like cheese. The platter is embarrassingly large and can easily be shared by two eaters who don't rank places on how much food they can get per dollar spent. I had pretty low expectations of this place going in, but was pretty damn happy with the nachos. The service was a little weak but not heinous. I've spent over 20 years of my life in Texas and Arizona, so I have high expectations of my Mexican food. I really haven't found any acceptable Mexican restaurants here to my tastes, but when it comes to 'pile' nachos these are the best I've ever had. I'm not sure about the 'lime flavored margaritas' on their menu... I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to try one. But you can expect to see me here on football weekends diving into a pile of nachos and a cold beer.

Came in on a Saturday afternoon and it was mostly empty. Despite there only being about 3 other tables of people, we still had to wait a good 20 min for a waitress to appear at our table, and even that was mainly due to us asking someone else who worked there if there was anyone who was supposed to be waiting on our table. We started with something called the Trifecta (Chips with sides of guacamole, salsa and cheese dip). For a place with the word Nacho in their name, they should have better tasting chips. These were clearly store bought, cheap, and overly salty. The salsa was bland, the cheese dip was runny and the guacamole just wasn't great. I had Quesadillas, which are generally pretty good no matter where you go. They were alright, but honestly the ones I had 2 nights earlier at Poe's Tavern (which is clearly not a mexican place) were significantly better. My other 3 friends also had alright, but bland and boring food. I cant think of a single reason to come back here, and advise everyone to just go somewhere (anywhere) other than here.
(2)Scott P.
I went back recently as this was a place a friend insisted to go for lunch. I had the enchiladas this time and the were just average. Nothing special. We did order the nachos and those were good. Overall, not seeing the big attraction here and I'll be looking elsewhere from now on when it comes to Mexican. It's just not authentic or home style enough for me.
(3)Scotty C.
I have been to Juanita's a handful of times. Usually for happy hour, sitting at the bar with some friends and maybe some chips with salsa. Overall I had a good experience with the service, staff, and atmosphere of the place. The prices are always decent and even better specials during happy hour. A friend and I had a plan for happy hour after work yesterday. He had already scoured the Restaurant Week deals (Jan 10th-20th), that started that day, and found that Juanita Greenberg's had a tasty special for 2 people. Here is the deal: Bucket of Beer OR Pitcher of House Margarita Chips and Salsa to share Each choose either a Burrito OR Quesadilla with your choice of meat. ALL FOR 20 BUCKS! We couldn't pass that up. Our waitress came to my table when I sat down (I arrived first) and mentioned the restaurant week deal to me. I let her know that was what we were here for but, I would just have a drink while I waited for my friend to decide on our options. She went and got my margarita asap and came back to let me know that if I was planning on taking advantage of the restaurant week deal anyway, she could go ahead and bring out the chips and salsa to start. Not a big deal but, I thought it was nice of her to ask. I took her up on her offer and started with that. They were good. I personally like the chips to be thinner, and a plus if they are still warm from the fryer. After my friend arrived we decided on the pitcher of House Margarita on the rocks (they offered frozen as well). It was better than your average house margarita. Tasty but a little light on the booze we felt. We finished the whole pitcher and didn't feel a thing (we might have other problems though). For my meal I ordered the Andouille Sausage Burrito. I don't think I have had sausage in a burrito before, not counting chorizo, so I figured I would try that. The burrito was a good size and was stuffed with your typical burrito accompaniments. I enjoyed the sausage and would get it again. No rice or beans with this special but for $20 who's complaining. Our server was pretty on point for the whole experience until the end. She asked if we wanted our check or more drinks. We said we would finish the pitcher and let her know. She pretty much stopped coming by after that and by the time she came by again we had empty glasses and were waiting to get going. Not too long but, a noticeable amount of time. I would say this place is A-OK.

I was a little bit disappointed with this place. I am also convinced that there is no AMAZING mexican food in charleston. My friend ranted and raved about this place - we had takeout, so I can't comment on the atmosphere of the place, but the food was just boring and lacked flavor. I had the chicken burrito - and it was pretty big, which was nice, but it was too juicy and leaked everywhere. The chicken itself was actually a bit dry. It wasn't terrible, but it's definitely nothing special, or anything I would go out of my way to get again. I think one other reviewer said he'd rather go to Chipotle, and although in principle I would much rather support a small local chain rather than a giant corporate chain, the burritos I've gotten at chipotle have been as good or better and cheaper.
(3)Sonja B.
This is one of those places you love or hate. We happen to like them. The nachos are served more like a pizza than traditional nachos, but that's okay with us. Furthermore, they are not afraid to use jalapeños w/ seeds - refreshing to find outside of Texas. The drinks ( alcoholic) are reasonable if you visit during well advertised times. They've added a veggie quesadilla, and it is great! Love the fact that it is more than the standard onions, peppers, mushroom & cheese....zucchini & yellow squash were a nice surprise. The kid's cheese quesadilla was enthusiastically eaten by several in our party of 7. All in all - recommend if you need a tex-mex fix in the area.
(4)Amy Yvonne H.
Very disappointing. They took 2 hours to make our food with not a ton of customers. They messed up two of the orders & brought the right orders back with uncooked pieces of rice (a lot of uncooked rice, like in every bite). The house margaritas seemed to have little to no alcohol & the manager or the kitchen guy blamed everything on the waitress which was pretty lame of him since she was a great server. All the food was mediocre & disappointing & they only had 1 thing on the menu in different mediums like taco version, burritos version, hard taco version, etc.
(1)Jen H.
Love it here. Great service. Great location. Games and live music... Always a great time. Not overly crowded but still busy in a fun way. GO. Located right before the bridge so a great food and pregame before downtown. Also near public house and Shem creek for great spots before/after jaunitas. Not the greatest deals on shots but many other great qualities to make up for that! My friend was raving about his taco said it was amazing. 3.50 for one.
(5)Leah W.
Completely underwhelmed. I heard good things but experienced mediocre things. Boring food. Annoying crowd of drunk college kids. Our waitress seemed like a ditzy 16 year old. Never checked on us and took probably 15 minutes to get the check after we asked for it. Meh. I'd rather go to Chipotle.

We were in Charleston for 5 days and on a mission to pick restaurants only via Yelp recommendations. We had taken the dog to a local park for a walk, and needed a dog friendly place. Juanita Greenberg's fit the bill & reviews were good. Dogs are allowed at the sidewalk tables but not in the bar patio. There are also sidewalk tables on the left side of the building, a bit further from the busy street. The food was average. We got started with chips, salsa & guacamole. Lots of food for the money, chips & guac were tasty, salsa tasted like tomato sauce. The fish tacos were tasty but a bit too much red cabbage. The shrimp tacos were a bit disappointing, the shrimp were tiny. I guess we expected fresh, local shrimp and these tasted more like restaurant supply frozen stuff. Our experience might have been better if we'd had better service. Our waitress left much to be desired. She was very slow with everything. My wife's frozen margarita was 1/2 thawed when served. When my wife asked if they HAD frozen margarita's, the response was "yes." While we were waiting (and waiting) for our check, we heard the same question from the table behind us. THEIR waitress told them about the 4-5 different flavors they had (my wife would have loved a mango margarita) and the 3 specialty margaritas. When ordering the shrimp tacos, we asked the waitress if they could hold the onions. Her response was they were already in the pico de gallo. We assumed the Pico was on the side and figured, no problem, she'd pick around them. When they arrived, the pico was already on the tacos, so it was much harder to hunt out the onions. Since we'd asked to hold them, seems like the waitress could have at least offered to put the pico on the side. All in all, just not good service.

Even though the reviews were mixed, we decided to try it. I had the nachos and my husband had the quesadilla and then we ordered chips, salsa and cheese dip. The chips did not seem freshly made and the salsa was ok. Once we got our main dishes, the tortilla's, on both dishes, were burned. We waited for about ten minutes for the waitress to come back so we could send the food back but she never came back. We were so hungry so we ate a little but couldn't stand the burn taste. I finally tracked down another waitress to get the manager since our waitress had seemed to disappear. We use yelp all the time to find new restaurants to eat and we use the reviews to make our decision. We will not be going back to this restaurant! Also, if you are looking for real mexican food, this is not your place. We regret not going to our usual mexican restaurant for lunch.

Great Tex-Mex Great variety of food Very good value Will definitely return on our next visit to Mt Pleasant

DO IT NOW.

Very mediocre food. Everything was quite bland. The salt missing from the food was found in the margarita which tasted like the ocean. Service could have been a bit more attentive.
(2)Colleen J.
(4)Sonja B.

Delicious!

Yuck Yuck Yuck.... that's all that needs to be said! GROSS!

This place is great. Food is not the healthiest but it has always been consistently good. Happy hour is usually packed with people sitting outside and inside.
(4)William H.
I have to say that I never went to the location downtown, but when it opened here I went, and I really like it. It's fast, fun venue, great service, and most of all the food is always hot and good. They have great specials, and live music as well. This is a great time, and a great location.

(1)Jessie S.
